“Green hydrogen production continues to draw extensive focus in the clean energy sector as supporting technologies develop and improve in efficiency. Hydrogen production facilities are being built across the globe, but because the process is dependent on having a ready supply of water, the increase in popularity has brought growing concern from local communities about the environmental impact of green H2 production. This series of three blog posts will outline and discuss these concerns and consider some of the solutions proposed to overcome them.”Â
“Location is everything in green hydrogen production. There must be a source of consistent, abundant green energy to power its electrolyzers, as well as a reliable water supply for the hydrogen creation process. The best source of energy for these facilities is usually solar – but, typically, good places for solar farms do not have a steady supply of water. Most PV projects are being built in arid areas, meaning abundant solar power but pre-existing water stress.”Â
“With the growth of the clean energy economy, and a heavy focus on hydrogen, green energy and water resources have sparked concern in local economies. Most concerns focus on the belief that there will be a major increase in water consumption  and that there are negative environmental impacts from desalination.  For the most part, these fears come from a lack of information being shared and a lack of knowledge about the production process of green hydrogen. Both of these factors are understandable because H2 production is still a nascent technology and not something that the general public has much experience with.”Â
