“Historically, the strength or weakness of the broader economy and the real estate industry have been tightly coupled and correlated. While some may point to COVID-19’s negative impact on certain parts of real estate as evidence that proptech can only thrive in boom times, I believe building a successful proptech company is less about anticipating economic upswings and markets and more about timing and taking advantage of the right technological trends. In short, this is as good of a time as any to start a proptech company if you know where to look.”
“About 60% of lower-priced homeowners may pay higher property taxes than their counterparts who own more expensive homes, a new study shows.
Why? Owners of those higher-valued properties, ranging from $500,000 to $1.2 million, are at least two times more likely to appeal their property taxes and possibly pay far less, said Ownwell, a property-based startup in Austin, Texas. The amount of appeals depends on the county and the state.”
“It came as no surprise when, at the start of COVID-19, venture capital investors largely went pencils-down for several weeks and shifted their focus to their existing portfolio companies. Extending company runways, preparing for longer funding cycles and managing operations in a novel business environment became the crux of company resilience. Now, moving into May, we can see this shift reflected in both the decline in number of early-stage companies funded and total capital invested.”
“We are a fast-growing, mission-driven company dedicated to making the costs of property ownership more fair and equitable. Regardless of real estate expertise or financial status, everyone should have access to the information, tools, and resources to manage real estate like a professional.”
“Joseph Noor & Colton Pace
Driven by a mission to democratize real estate tools once exclusive to experts, Colton Pace and Joseph Noor cofounded Ownwell in 2020 with Frank DiZenzo (who is over 30). Ownwell is a proptech company that helps consumers reduce the costs of owning real estate. Their software identifies properties that are overpaying property taxes, and their local teams of experts pursue tax corrections on behalf of property owners across the country. They have raised $25 million from investors like First Round Capital and Long Journey Ventures and Founder Collective. They currently have over 150,000 customers and are projecting $10 million in revenue this year.”
“Everyone warns you not to build on top of someone else’s platform.
When I first started in VC more than 10 years ago, I was told never to invest in a company building on top of another company’s platform. Dependence on a platform makes you susceptible to failure and caps the return on your investment because you have no control over API access, pricing changes and end-customer data, among other legitimate concerns.”
“A year and a half ago, when they arrived in Austin, mother and daughter slept in their car. Then they found a shelter in Marble Falls before moving to a SAFE Alliance shelter in Austin.
On Wednesday, Ownwell, a company that helps people understand their property taxes, brought boxes of gifts for Gaulmon and Kourtni as part of the Statesman’s Season for Caring program. Gifts included clothing, shoes, bedsheets and toys.”
“And many have seen their property taxes rise dramatically. To protest, homeowners usually have to file an appeal or hire an attorney to handle the process. But this year, there is a new way to protest.
Ownwell, an Austin-based startup, helps commercial and residential property owners save money on property taxes, by identifying owners who are overpaying and helping them get a reduction on their tax bills.”
“Curious how much wealthier residents shell out for secondary homeownership costs like property taxes and home maintenance?”
“Homeowners can hire a local lawyer or appeal on their own. Another option is Ownwell, a service that provides tax appeal services to homeowners in most states. Homeowners can enter their address for an estimate of the average savings for a tax assessment appeal or tax exemption in their area.”
“For more than 65 years, Doris Gore’s DeKalb County home has been in her husband’s family.
But it sits in a fast gentrifying neighborhood near East Lake Golf Club and every year the appraised value on the tax assessment keeps going up.”
